Cyber Explorers, an initiative led by the UK Government, is a free educational platform that teaches young people aged 11-14 cyber security skills, exposes them to careers in cyber security and encourages them to consider further study in science and technology. Complementary to the learning programme, the Cyber Explorers Cup is an innovative competition designed to engage students aged 11-14 across the United Kingdom in an educational and interactive cyber security contest.

What competitors will be doing

The Cyber Squad have moved to a new Headquarters; due to the team growing and space urgently being needed. The problem is, it’s not quite ready for the team and not that secure!

We need your team of Explorers to get into the offices and lock it down, but we don’t have long. The site goes operational tomorrow, and the Cyber Squad need access to their top-secret systems to protect Cyber City.

Your team needs to concentrate on 3 areas; People, Processes and Technology. They will need to work through the challenges in each category to secure the Headquarters.

Good luck Explorers, the Cyber Squad are depending on you!

Competition details

The competition runs over a five-day period: 31 March 2025 to 4 April 2025.

Teams compete during a one-hour timeslot. You will be able to choose your date and timeslot when entering.

New for this year – schools can each enter up to 5 teams of 4-6 students. Your teams can either be made up of a whole class or your teams can be made up of a mix of students across year groups as long as they are 11-14 years old.

Also new for this year, home schools will compete as individuals in their own category against other individual home schoolers.

The fastest and most accurate teams secure victory in each country of the UK and as a home-school.

What prizes competitors win: Winning schools receive face-to-face half-day cyber security career events, exclusive merchandise, certificates and prizes from industry partners. The winning home-school will receive exclusive merchandise, certificates and prizes from industry partners.

Entry criteria

The competing school or home-school should have completed 3 or more of the content elements available. Examples are:

  • 3 episodes from the Challenges content section (each challenge is made up of 6 episodes, before the student can take ‘Save the City’)
  • 3 levels from the Missions content section (each Mission is made up of 3 levels, so they would complete one whole Mission or the first level from multiple Missions of they wish)
  • A blend of the above; 2 episodes and a level, or 2 levels and an episode

Progress will be assessed by the Cyber Explorers team.
